According to some psychologists, "friends" usher to a greater support to a person's system and higher level of antibodies preventing disease. They therefore, make one less prone to illness which also means minimal consultation with a doctor and less medical expenses.
It was also found out that a person with a lot of "friends" has the capacity for better handling of stress and tension. This may be due to the social support from friends and family which is indeed very important to one's life.
Apparently, having "friends" was also said to be better than prohibiting vices such as cigarettes as well as maintaining low-fat-diet and regular exercise.
By the way, friendships also differ in kind. And there are those we call "long-distance" friends. Although this is also good, usually moral support is only expressed through pen and paper, phones and cyberspace. Hence, it lacks the element of "touch" which is a very necessary antidote to stress.
